Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
  • Identify the full NT1 symptom pentad and the systemic clinical burden of orexin deficiency.
  • Apply the cataplexy interrogation question at the CPAP non-response encounter.
  • Differentiate NT1 from NT2, idiopathic hypersomnia, and common misdiagnoses using the defining diagnostic criterion of cataplexy or CSF hypocretin-1 <110 pg/mL.
  • Distinguish NT1 from medication-induced and primary psychiatric EDS using ICSD-3 criteria when psychiatric comorbidity complicates evaluation of excessive daytime sleepiness.
  • Apply evidence-based PSG/MSLT diagnostic protocols, including medication washout requirements, SOREMP interpretation, and CSF hypocretin-1 <110 pg/mL as a standalone NT1 diagnostic criterion per ICSD-3.
  • Integrate SDoH-informed screening, navigator referral pathways, and telehealth-compatible approaches to reduce diagnostic delay in NT1 across diverse patient populations.
  • Individualize NT1 treatment selection using an SDM framework informed by the limitations of current pharmacotherapy and the mechanism of emerging OX2R-directed therapies.

Program Overview

Narcolepsy Type 1 (NT1) remains substantially underrecognized, resulting in significant diagnostic delays and missed opportunities for timely treatment. This educational activity combines expert faculty presentations, a patient perspective, and an interactive AI-powered patient simulation to strengthen clinicians' ability to recognize NT1, apply evidence-based diagnostic strategies, address barriers to care, and integrate emerging therapies into patient-centered management. Through realistic clinical scenarios and practical discussion, participants will gain strategies to improve diagnostic accuracy and optimize outcomes for patients with NT1.

Target Audience

The primary audience for this activity includes pulmonologists, sleep specialists, primary care physicians, internists, hospitalists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and respiratory therapists involved in the diagnosis and management of narcolepsy.
