Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
  • Identify the full NT1 symptom pentad and the systemic clinical burden of orexin deficiency.
  • Apply the cataplexy interrogation question at the CPAP non-response encounter.
  • Differentiate NT1 from NT2, idiopathic hypersomnia, and common misdiagnoses using the defining diagnostic criterion of cataplexy or CSF hypocretin-1 <110 pg/mL.
  • Distinguish NT1 from medication-induced and primary psychiatric EDS using ICSD-3 criteria when psychiatric comorbidity complicates evaluation of excessive daytime sleepiness.
  • Apply evidence-based PSG/MSLT diagnostic protocols, including medication washout requirements, SOREMP interpretation, and CSF hypocretin-1 <110 pg/mL as a standalone NT1 diagnostic criterion per ICSD-3.
  • Integrate SDoH-informed screening, navigator referral pathways, and telehealth-compatible approaches to reduce diagnostic delay in NT1 across diverse patient populations.
  • Individualize NT1 treatment selection using an SDM framework informed by the limitations of current pharmacotherapy and the mechanism of emerging OX2R-directed therapies.

Program Overview

Narcolepsy Type 1 (NT1) remains substantially underrecognized, resulting in significant diagnostic delays and missed opportunities for timely treatment. This educational activity combines expert faculty presentations, a patient perspective, and an interactive AI-powered patient simulation to strengthen clinicians' ability to recognize NT1, apply evidence-based diagnostic strategies, address barriers to care, and integrate emerging therapies into patient-centered management. Through realistic clinical scenarios and practical discussion, participants will gain strategies to improve diagnostic accuracy and optimize outcomes for patients with NT1.

Target Audience

The primary audience for this activity includes pulmonologists, sleep specialists, primary care physicians, internists, hospitalists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and respiratory therapists involved in the diagnosis and management of narcolepsy.

Supporter Acknowledgement

This educational activity is supported by an independent educational grant from Takeda Pharmaceuticals U.S.A., Inc.

Use of artificial intelligence in this activity

This activity is jointly provided by Global Education Group (Global) and Iridium Continuing Education (IridiumCE). It includes an AI-simulated patient. You will talk with a virtual patient whose responses are generated by artificial intelligence. The patient's story is based on the lived experience of Casey McGarry, a patient living with narcolepsy type 1, and is shared with his consent. He has reviewed and approved how his experience is portrayed.

How the AI is controlled.

The simulated patient responds only within a case written and approved by the activity faculty, Clete A. Kushida, MD, PhD, and Atul Malhotra, MD. Clinical content is limited to a closed set of sources: current clinical guidelines and the references cited in the activity slides (see the reference list), current as of October 12, 2026.

The AI does not search the internet. It does not give you diagnostic or treatment recommendations. Before release, the faculty and the IridiumCE and Global Education Group planners, tested the simulation for accuracy, completeness, balance and freedom from commercial bias on October 12, 2026.

Platform: Patient dialogue is generated using OpenAI's GPT-4.1 model (gpt-4.1-2025-04-14). The patient's video avatar is powered by HeyGen.

Independence.
Global, as the accredited provider, is responsible for all content in this activity, including what the AI generates.

This activity is supported by an independent educational grant from Takeda Pharmaceuticals U.S.A., Inc. Takeda had no role in writing the case, configuring the AI, or deciding how it is scored. Scores reflect your clinical reasoning and communication, not which treatment is chosen. No product advertising is provided within activity.

Limitations. AI can make mistakes. Responses may occasionally be incomplete, worded unexpectedly, or wrong. Known limitations for this case, e.g. the patient cannot respond to physical-exam maneuvers outside the menu. This simulation is for educational purposes only and is not clinical guidance. The learners remain responsible for their own clinical decisions. If a response seems inaccurate or inappropriate, select Flag.

A clinical reviewer will review it.

Data. All conversation and scores are recorded so we can give personalized feedback, award credit, and evaluate and improve the activity.

Transcripts are stored apart from your name and analyzed in de-identified form. Iridium Continuing Education holds the transcripts in secure, access-controlled systems.

Learner data is never sold, never shared with commercial supporters except as aggregate de-identified results, and never used to train outside AI models.

Your voice is used only to transcribe your words. Your voice is never copied, cloned or used to create a synthetic voice. Please do not enter information about real patients.

Compliance. This use of AI follows the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) Guidance on the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in Accredited Continuing Education (January 30, 2026) and its Urgent Alert on the Use of AI in Accredited CE (April 14, 2026). It also meets the ACCME Standards for Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education.
